Call for Symposium Theme Proposals

Symposium Cumanum 2027

The Vergilian Society seeks proposals for the theme of its annual Symposium Cumanum to take place in late June 2027 at the Harry Wilks Study Center at the Villa Vergiliana in Cuma, Italy.

We welcome proposals for symposia that explore any aspect of Vergil’s works, the Vergilian tradition, or its reception from antiquity to the present day. Preference may be given to a subject that has not been treated recently. Descriptions of previous symposia are available on the Vergilian Society website.

Proposals should be submitted by the prospective symposium director, or lead director, if co-directors are envisioned. The selected director will have logistical assistance from the Vergilian Society’s Italian staff and executive committee.

Each proposal should be 250-300 words and include:

  • A brief rationale for the proposed theme
  • Examples of topics or approaches that might be included
  • Names of several scholars who work in the area who could be invited to participate

As an international meeting, the Symposium Cumanum attracts participants from around the world. In keeping with the Vergilian Society’s mission as an Italian-American cultural association, we especially encourage proposals that foster strong participation from scholars in both Italy and the United States.

Proposals should be submitted electronically to the President of the Vergilian Society, Lily Panoussi (panoussi@wm.edu) by October 31, 2025.  Informal enquiries are also welcome at this email address.
